The Amsterdam: A Handwritten Font for Warm, Approachable Campaigns

Choosing The Amsterdam for a Cozy Holiday Instagram Series

I was designing a holiday content series for a boutique lifestyle brand when I stumbled on The Amsterdam. The campaign needed a warm, approachable tone—think cozy knit sweaters, handwritten notes, and soft candlelight. I needed a font that felt personal, not polished. The Amsterdam fit the brief perfectly: a sweet, relaxed handwritten typeface that brought a human touch to every visual.

From the start, I noticed how The Amsterdam softened the overall look of the visuals. It didn’t scream “design”—it whispered “connection.” The letterforms are fluid and slightly bouncy, giving the impression of a real person writing with a pen. It’s the kind of font that makes your audience feel like they’re being spoken to directly, not marketed at.

How The Amsterdam Performs in Real Campaign Assets

I used The Amsterdam across multiple Instagram assets: carousel headers, story highlights, and quote graphics. It worked best in short, high-impact text like headlines and captions with minimal copy. For example, on a “Cozy Moments” quote graphic, the font wrapped around a soft image overlay and remained legible even on mobile previews. It added a sense of intimacy without sacrificing clarity.

In story highlights, I used The Amsterdam for category labels like “Gift Guide” and “Winter Vibes.” Its casual charm made the navigation feel friendlier. On YouTube thumbnails and Reels covers, it performed well as a title font over muted backgrounds. The trick was to pair it with strong contrast—either a dark background with light text or vice versa—to ensure readability at small sizes.

When to Use The Amsterdam—and When to Step Back

The Amsterdam shines in short bursts of text. It’s ideal for headlines, callouts, logo-style text, and decorative titles. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for long-form copy, body text, or anything that needs to be read quickly in dense layouts. It’s a display font, not a workhorse. Trying to use it for a multi-paragraph email banner, for instance, made the message feel cluttered and hard to scan.

It also doesn’t suit formal or corporate campaigns. If you’re designing a B2B webinar banner or a tech product teaser, The Amsterdam’s playful tone might not align with the brand voice. But for lifestyle brands, wellness creators, wedding planners, and small businesses, this font can be a powerful emotional connector.

Pairing The Amsterdam for Visual Harmony

To keep the design balanced, I paired The Amsterdam with a clean sans serif like Montserrat or Lato. This combination gave the visuals both warmth and structure. The handwritten font handled the emotional headline, while the sans serif carried supporting details like dates, locations, or calls to action.

For more editorial-style layouts—like a Pinterest campaign or blog graphic—I sometimes paired it with a serif font for a layered, magazine-like feel. The key was to let The Amsterdam be the star of the show. Overloading the layout with too many competing styles dulled its charm.

Practical Considerations Before Launching with The Amsterdam

Before using The Amsterdam in client work or templates, I double-checked the font’s licensing. Since it’s categorized under Script Amp and listed as a Fonts product, I made sure it included commercial use rights. I also verified that the package included multiple file formats—OTF, TTF, WOFF—to ensure compatibility across design tools and web platforms.

It’s also worth exploring the font’s stylistic sets. The Amsterdam includes ligatures and alternates that add subtle variation to repeated letters, which is great for avoiding a robotic look in headlines. For multilingual campaigns, I checked if the font supported extended language sets. It covered Western European languages, which was enough for the project, but it might not be ideal for global campaigns requiring Cyrillic or Asian scripts.

Final Take: A Font That Feels Like a Personal Note

The Amsterdam is more than a pretty script. It’s a design tool that brings warmth and personality to digital campaigns. Whether you're crafting a product launch graphic, a Pinterest pin, or a cozy email header, this font can help your visuals feel more human. It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution—but when the mood calls for friendliness and authenticity, The Amsterdam delivers.

If you're a marketer or content creator looking to inject more soul into your visuals, give The Amsterdam a try. Use it thoughtfully, pair it wisely, and let it do what it does best: make your audience feel like you’re speaking directly to them.
